Why should your child have their eyes tested?
Children and adults can have very different visual needs and can have a range of difficulties with their eyes that are related to age. The way the examination is conducted needs to adapt for every individual, especially for very young children.
Children use their eyes intensely every day to learn and read.
Children’s eyes are still developing until they reach 8-10 years of age (and sometimes even after that age). We specialise in examining if their visual developmental milestones have been met.
We understand that children can often be daunted by the task of having an eye test, but we have special techniques and years of experience in putting them at their ease and making the entire experience enjoyable.

My child hasn't complained about their eyes - do they still need an eye test?
Absolutely – eye tests are vital to checking the health of the eyes.
60% of children with vision problems do not complain about their sight as they either believe what they are experiencing is normal or they do not realise that there is a problem.
Eye tests are the first step in being able to detect vision problems and assess the general health of the eyes. For some of the common signs and symptoms.
My child isn’t reading or can’t recognise letters yet – can they still be tested?
There is a common myth that children need to be able to read to be given an eye test. This is not the case. At Central Vision Opticians, in addition to familiar sight test charts, we have alternative proven tests for assessing the vision of younger children.
In fact, the youngest patient we have tested was a 2 month old baby.
I’m concerned about my child’s performance at school – could this be vision related?
Yes – many of children who are experiencing challenges with their performance at school can be helped by teaching them how to improve the use of their eyes, visual skills and how they process what they learn visually. It’s not about what they see but how they make sense of what they see.
